Another Meeting with Del

After a further conversation with Del, it gave me a lot of insight and clarity about my next steps. It also did bring an end to our original phase one, crossing guards aren’t trained to control traffic so they aren’t allowed to, our idea makes it so Del is controlling traffic making it difficult to approve.

Key Problem: Motorists are not respecting the crossing guard.

To further elaborate on this what drivers are doing is she there are people crossing or about to cross and people come at a very high speed they also don’t stop at the first crosswalk but move to the middle of the road in a hurry to arrive at school. Drivers are warned much before they get to the crosswalk that there is a crossing, a speed limit of 25, and 3 stop signs.

So why aren’t they respecting the sign?

Del believes it is because of the lack of knowledge about road laws. By law, drivers are required to stop at the first white line when either side of the street is crossing. We see people stop at traffic lights (well most people) as they know the rules and consequences about them.

So what are the next steps?

To solve idea about the knowledge we may be able to put up signs with small messages that tell people about what the law mandates, the problem is that people are often is such a rush they look over these. Another idea is to attach lights and sound to the yellow traffic signal in the middle of the road. The benefits are that it is very portable, it is on both sides so will stop drivers on the first white line, people will pay more attention due to the lights. The problem is approval putting those lights, we will probably need approval from the police. If we do get it approved we can make it so that it is completely autonomous so that as soon as pedestrians walk on to the street, cameras will detect that and turn on the lights. We also will need to implement a security camera which adds a sense of discipline to drivers.
